Coach's Corner

 Happy Holidays, Everyone! 

I’m excited about the new schedule and our continuing opportunities to become better swimmers while enjoying the lovely (cough) morning weather as winter approaches! I am impressed by the commitment and great attitudes I’m seeing from the entire Swim Club, and am grateful for the effort everyone has been putting forth as we continue to work through the challenges presented by the pandemic restrictions. 

[On that note, please remember to wear your masks, keep your distance, and stay home if you’re not feeling well. It’s also important to continue our commitment to vacating the pool area on time and respecting the HOA rules. Thanks!]

 IMPORTANT CONCEPT! As has been the case since Doug started building this team, our SaddleBrooke Swim Club coached workouts are for the benefit of our members…not for the ego of the coach. As coaches, we are here to help you become better swimmers if we can, and will do our best to provide workouts and technique feedback that will help you achieve your personal goals. 

With that in mind, please remember these important points: 

  • You are not obligated to swim the workout as written, and are welcome to modify (or sit out) any portion of it…as long as you do not interfere with or disrupt any of your club teammates. You should listen to your body and take a break (or get out and go home) when you’ve had enough.
  • Your volunteer coaching staff strives to provide useful and appropriate feedback delivered in a positive manner. At the same time, we totally understand if you’re not interested or are feeling overloaded. When that happens, please politely let us know, and we will be happy to let you work out in peace.
  • If you have questions or would like additional feedback, please ask! When we inevitably say something confusing, please ask for clarification. We strive to communicate effectively, but we appreciate your help to ensure we succeed.
  • If you receive conflicting instruction from different coaches, please let us know. Usually, we are saying the same thing in slightly different ways – which can certainly be confusing, but is easily resolved. On the other hand, if there are genuine conflicts in what we’re teaching, we need to know about it so we can do the appropriate research to make sure we’re doing what’s right.

Please note that we are tweaking the coaching schedule over the next few months, so the faces you see on deck may vary from what you expect. The main structure of the workouts will remain the same for all practices on a given day, even if different coaches are on deck at different times. Depending on signups and availability of coaches, there may be days (such as Sundays) where there may not be a coach on deck, so you’ll be free to do your own workouts.
